Liposome morphologies. Liposomes are presented with respect to the shape, size and number of bilayers. SUV = small unilamellar vesicle, LUV = large unilamellar vesicle, MLV = multilamellar vesicle, GUV = giant unilamellar vesicle, OVV = oligovesicular vesicle. The short-range structure of the lipid bilayers is shown in the magnified view. The GUV on the fluorescence picture is made of a mixture of phospholipids and fluorescent dye, and contains three red-fluorescent 200-nm polystyrene spheres which can move freely within the vesicle. The scale bar is 5 μm. Adapted from reference with permission. Copyright 2005 by the American Chemical Society.
